I am majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Mitchell Community College. I came to Mitchell because it offered the course that I was interested in, the technologies (many, many types of equipment to help you learn and be knowledgeable), and most importantly, GREAT instructors and resources.
Before I started the Mechanical Engineering Technology program, I was undecided about what I really wanted to do when I grew up. I thought to myself, I am a mom of five; if anything, I should know what I want to do with my life by now. But believe it or not, I didn’t have a clue. For the longest, I felt like I was nowhere. So I decided to go back to school, trying to better myself and set better examples for my children.
I’ve always been a hands-on person and I do NOT give up on anything that is handed to me. I was introduced to this program by my best friend, my husband. He said that this program would suit me well. He knows me best. Spring 2013, I enrolled in the Mechanical Engineering Technology program with no clue of what I was getting myself into. I was nervous but there was NO WAY I was going to back out. I met with Dr. Sharon Rouse, director of engineering and my advisor, and she helped me with my educational plans. Before I knew it, I FOUND that I was actually good at it; this is so ME.
I’ve learned so much over the semesters. I’ve learned to use a manual lathe and milling machines, do CNC turning and use CNC milling machines from Dr. Rouse and Billy Harris. I’ve learned so much from my Drafting Instructor Shawn Fraver from AutoCAD and Inventor to SolidWorks. This is the engineering side of art. They also offer welding classes. Al Lofland, the welding Instructor, can and will teach you everything you need to know to get started from beginner’s level to expert. I walked into the welding class, had never once welded in my life, and I did it. So can you; anything is possible, if you just believe in yourself. For hands-on training, they’ve got it all here at Mitchell. You will learn more than what you ask for.
Also, there is a ROCKET TEAM here at Mitchell Community College. Hands-on team work, fascinating! For more info, Dr. Knight is the one to talk to.
Now, let’s talk about job opportunities after graduation. That’s a GUARANTEE! What’s great about Mitchell is that you will most likely get a job offer before graduation. Mitchell Community College along with Dr. Rouse and Mr. Fraver will help you look for a job that is RIGHT for you and fits your program of study and interests when you are ready. Mr. Fraver helped me get into IOMAX USA, Inc. as a Drafter/Designer in SolidWorks in December 2014 as an intern. I have been asked to work full-time before I graduate in May 2015. I do plan to continue my education at UNC-Charlotte for my 2+2 in Mechanical Engineering Technology to get my bachelor’s degree. Just remember, anything is possible in life, you just have to try. And most importantly, NEVER give up.
