Women’s History Month Kickoff Event with guest speaker and North Carolina Women: Making History coauthor Emily Herring Wilson

Emily Herring Wilson will speak about her experiences writing North Carolina Women: Making History, which sheds light on the lives and contributions of many women whose stories have rarely been told, in part because their contributions tended to occur in the relative privacy of their families and communities.

 

Women’s History Month Movie Screening: Suffragette
Wednesday, March 18 |  5–7 p.m.
Rotary Auditorium, Statesville Campus

Suffragette tells the story of British suffragettes in the early 1900s, but as Time magazine states, ‘American audiences will, in a certain way, be learning about their own suffrage movement, which imported its strain of civil disobedience from the Brits.’

Women’s History Month: Women’s Panel Discussion

The panel will feature women in leadership positions from the College and from our community, who will offer advice, reflect on challenges they have faced, and take questions from the audience.  This is a great opportunity, especially for young people and anyone else seeking inspiration and direction.

  

Women’s History Month: Musical Performance

Shearer Hall, Statesville Campus

The performance will feature pieces by women composers, as well as Stone’s Throw, an incredibly talented local trio of women who perform and write Celtic music.

We are so excited to honor Toni Morrison, author of The Bluest Eye, our current campus-wide read, by screening The Pieces I Am. In this documentary, Morrison reflects on her life and on larger themes and issues she confronted throughout her career.
