Fiona Raffan was recognized as Mitchell Community College’s Student of the Month. Davis Regional Medical Center’s Gina Parker RN, director of quality, and Janie Stikeleather, director of public relations made the presentation. Davis is one of the College’s annual sponsors.
Raffan is a nursing student, wife, and mother of four children, ages 3, 5, 7 and 8. In 2011, she served as an Honor Marshal at the 2011 Nurse Pinning Ceremony. She plans to graduate from the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program in May then pursue a bachelor’s degree in nursing.
In addition to school and family, Raffan is active in the community. She works as an assistant Girl Scout leader, a volunteer at Serenity House in Mooresville, and a volunteer at her children’s schools.
Originally from England, Raffan has a BA Honors in Modern Languages (French and German) from the University of the West England and a post graduate certificate in Education from Aberdeen University.
In the nomination it states, “Fiona is an amazing woman, balancing enormous responsibilities at school and home. Her calm encouraging demeanor serves to de-stress her classmates and her patients.”
In accepting the recognition, Raffan said, “I consider it a gift to be able to help my patients.”
Mitchell Community College’s ADN program is recognized for excellence. All forty 2012 graduates achieved a 100 percent passage rate on the NC state board licensing exam (NCLEX-RN) on the first attempt. Out of the state’s 74 nursing schools, only 21 achieved a perfect pass rate. The program which began in 1982 has maintained full approval by the NC Board of Nursing and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission.
