Mitchell Community College has named Beverly Brown (left), coordinator of the associate in fine arts music/music education program and Emily Schuttenberg(right), community music coordinator with responsibilities for the community chorus and the community band. The band is directed by Jack Horner. Schuttenberg also serves as piano instructor. The positions which are a part of the humanities department, replace those previously held by Jane and Dan Pardue who retired in May.
Brown is currently working on a PhD in music education at UNC-G. She has a master’s degree in music education from the University of Georgia and a bachelor’s degree in music education from Appalachian State University. Brown serves as director of Mitchell’s jazz ensemble. Prior to joining Mitchell in 2005, she taught middle school and high school band and chorus in Georgia and North Carolina. She also served as a music instructor at Randolph Community College.
She is a member of the National Association for Music Education, the North Carolina Music Educators Association, the North Carolina Community College Faculty Association, and the College Music Society. She routinely serves as a guest clinician and adjudicator across the state.
Schuttenberg, who grew up in Atlanta, received a master’s degree in music from Western Carolina and a bachelor’s degree in piano and musical theatre from Huntingdon College in Montgomery, Alabama. Most recently, Schuttenberg was music instructor at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and general musir for elementary and middle school at Sacred Heart Catholic School. Other experience includes accompanist, piano instructor, and private piano teacher at Catawba College.
She routinely performs classical piano as soloist and accompanist for choirs, instrumental, and vocal recitals and frequently performs on stage with several community theatre groups.
Anyone in the community who enjoys performing is encouraged to join the community band which meets on Mondays or the community chorus which meets on Tuesdays. Both groups practice at 7 p.m. in Shearer Hall. Band began practice last week and the chorus begins. Sept. 17. For more information, call (704) 878-4321.
