King Celebration Is Jan. 15 on Statesville Campus

Mitchell Community College will hold its annual celebration of the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Thursday, Jan. 15, at 12:20 p.m. in Shearer Hall on the Statesville Campus. The event is free and open to the public.

Dr. Forrest TomsForrest Toms, an associate professor in the Leadership Studies Doctoral Program at NC A&T State University, will be the guest speaker. In addition to his work at NC A&T, Toms frequently works as a consultant on diversity and organizational change.

The annual Viola Kimbrough Parker Diversity Award recipients will be announced during the program. Parker gave years of service as a Mitchell employee, and was an early champion of diversity at the College. Because Parker, who died in 1996, exemplified the principles of diversity and the ideals of King, the awards are presented each year during the celebration.
