Stories of Excellence

Molly Nicholson

If Molly Nicholson had one word to describe Mitchell Community College, it would be “family.” As a student then later as a staff member, Nicholson has seen over and over again how the employees at Mitchell treat students and each other like family—supporting, encouraging and helping each other to excel.

Nicholson had big plans when she came to Mitchell in 2010 – to graduate from Mitchell, continue at UNC-Chapel Hill where she would graduate top of her class, then begin a meaningful career. The family she found at Mitchell helped her along this path. Nicholson recalled how many Mitchell employees, particularly instructor and dean Mark Smalley, supported her and believed in her, giving her the extra push she needed to achieve her goals. “Everyone here goes out of their way to help students and give them the attention they need to succeed,” Nicholson noted, “We really are a college focused on student success and helping our students excel, not only in their studies, but in life.” Nicholson graduated Mitchell with her Associate in Arts degree in 2012, then transferred to UNC-Chapel Hill where she double majored in in Management and Organizational Communication, graduating in 2014.

Now the Data Specialist for Institutional Research and Planning at Mitchell, Nicholson feels she has reached her goal of having a meaningful career. “I am grateful for what Mitchell did for me as a student, and I feel very blessed to now be able to be a part of helping students make a better life for themselves and their families.” Nicholson is happy to once again be a part of the Mitchell family, carrying on a 160 year tradition of helping the citizens of Iredell County be prepared to excel.
