Mitchell students nominated for honor

Mitchell students Courtney Cox-Manser (Statesville) and Angela Johnson (Hiddenite) have been selected as the top nominees for the All-USA Community College Academic Team from Mitchell Community College. The All-USA Community College Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence along with leadership and service. Twenty national team members are selected annually in March with each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. Both Mitchell students’ scholarship applications will be placed in the national pool for this coveted honor.

Courtney Cox-Manser is an Associate in Arts student planning to transfer to Appalachian State University or UNC-Charlotte in Spring 2017 to pursue a Bachelors in Sociology. Cox-Manser’s long-term goal is to earn a Masters in Social Work in order to provide services to those who are in need. She would also like to teach in higher education. An active Phi Theta Kappa member and the chapter secretary, Cox-Manser is planning a Community Volunteer Fair that Mitchell will be hosting in April. Cox-Manser balances her educational career with her work study position in Mitchell’s Counseling and Advising departments, still finding time for her family, husband Rik and her five children.

Angela Johnson is a Criminal Justice major with a passion for helping children in need. Johnson’s ideal career after graduation is working with the Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) program as an advocate for children or as a juvenile court counselor. Currently a volunteer for the GAL program, Johnson feels this is one of the most meaningful things she has ever been a part of. “I love children, all children,” she noted, “but I have a special place in my heart for kids in need or trouble.” Johnson is also currently a board member of Child Advocates of Iredell and Alexander County and a volunteer at the Boys and Girls Club. In addition, family life keeps her busy, raising goats with her husband and spending time with her two children and one grandchild.
