Mitchell receives donation for new scholarship
Mitchell Community College Foundation and Endowment for Excellence recently received a $45,000 donation from Central United Methodist Church of Mooresville (Central UMC) for the establishment of a current-use, need-based scholarship fund. The scholarship is intended to provide “last dollar” support for students who demonstrate financial hardships that traditional, federal student aid may not cover.
Central UMC, located just across Academy Street from Mitchell’s Mooresville Campus, has a long history of partnering with the college. Central UMC Pastor Randy Sherrill is proud to share stories of the modest yet impactful ministry of purchasing new stethoscopes for Mitchell’s CNA students in Mooresville. This donation, however seemingly small, can make a difference in a student’s educational journey. Along with several “coffee and conversation” events and refreshments during exam week sponsored by the church, Central UMC has also provided school supplies for students in need. “Beyond ministering to its community, Central UMC is a church that supports its community’s future through education,” said James Hogan, Mitchell’s Vice President for Advancement. Central UMC is just one of several Iredell County faith-based organizations supporting education and excellence at Mitchell. Trinity Episcopal Church in Statesville is currently working with Mitchell faculty and staff to provide a clothes closet for students in need of professional clothing for a job interview. Both of these organizations recognize that supporting student success can take many forms.
Raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for scholarships, programs, and initiatives each year, the Mitchell Community College Foundation and Endowment for Excellence is the college’s primary fundraising operation. Learn more about how you can support the Foundation’s efforts or call (704) 878-4321.
