Stories of Excellence–Lindsey Hebert
Lindsey Elizabeth Hebert is a champion of life’s challenges. Her life journey has led her from shy student to mentor and service-minded community member. Hebert credits her time at Mitchell for helping her blossom.
Early in her life, Hebert was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). She has faced challenges that many of her peers have not, but she has always had the support of her family in managing any difficulties that arise. After a rocky start with schools, her mother decided to craft a home school curriculum for Hebert. The curriculum was a much better match for Hebert’s needs, and she flourished. After she graduated high school, Hebert and her mother decided that attending the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program at Mitchell would be an ideal next step. Her mother states, “I’m not sure where we heard about it whether it was a magazine or an email, but the ABE program seemed to be the right thing for Lindsey.”
Hebert’s first few months of the ABE program were challenging because of her shy nature. “I wouldn’t talk, I would just sit there and do nothing. Then all of a sudden, I just came out of my shell,” Lindsey explained. Hebert has made many friends and has become a student mentor for the program. She takes time to help the other students with reading, math and art. She goes out of her way to make sure that they feel welcome in the program. Her instructors–Ms. Compton, Ms. Rachael and Ms. Tonya–have helped her along the way and celebrated her transformation.
Some of Hebert’s favorite memories of the program are the events and activities the students take part in, such as running a food cart, taking computer and cooking classes, and cleaning up around campus. She also enjoyed the public service activities like creating cards for veterans and for Mitchell employee birthdays. “I think activities like these have to be my favorite part of the program,” she shared. The ABE students’ handmade birthday cards are well loved across campus by the many faculty and staff who receive them. “I look forward to my homemade card each year. Even more than I look forward to birthday cake” stated a staff member “I have saved each card I have received.”
Besides continuing her studies and service in the ABE program, Hebert enjoys horseback riding, fostering kittens, and family travel and activities. She also has a passion for cooking and baking. Hebert hopes to obtain a position at a local bakery. Her advice to others considering the ABE program is just to take one step at a time. Her journey in the program has been an inspiration to those who know her.
