High School Equivalency and Basic Skills
The Basic Skills Program at Mitchell Community College assists students in improving their reading, writing, and math skills. Students will prepare for their High School Equivalency test, with the ultimate goal of earning their High School Equivalency degree.
English as a Second Language classes are also available to learn survival-level English.
All Basic Skills classes are free to students.
Mitchell Community College offers programs that combine Basic Skills and occupational education to assist students in finding employment. In most cases, Basic Skills students can have tuition or registration fees waived for continuing education occupational classes while preparing for the High School Equivalency test at the same time.

Classes are offered to help you achieve your High School Equivalency Diploma. Paper Based and Computer Based Testing are available to earn your HSE.
You must pass all subject area tests in Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies to earn your HSE diploma from the state of NC. There are no fees for the classes and materials but testing fees are currently $10.75 for each computer-based test and $15 for each paper-based test.

Adult High School Diploma- A partnership between Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina and Mitchell Community College. The Access Center offers a unique opportunity for individuals who are 16 years or age or older to earn an Adult High School diploma at no cost. Finish High School through the High School Equivalency Program and prepare for an occupational at the same time. Mitchell Community College will pay for your occupation/career tuition for the following pathways.

Nursing Assistant I
Train to provide personal care and basic nursing services for the elderly and other adults. The program includes 51 hours of classroom study, 101 hours of lab practice and 40 hours of clinical experience. Students are certified in American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
Industrial Technology
Become cross-trained in manual machining, blueprint reading, introductory hydraulics and pneumatics, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), basic wiring, welding, motors and controls, and basic schematic reading for wiring.
Welding
Acquire basic welding skills. Learn to use tools to shape and cut metals, interpret blueprints, and understand weld tests and codes, all with an emphasis on safety. Gain experience in stick, MIG and TIG welding, and plasma cutting. Heavy emphasis is on practical hands-on applications. You must provide appropriate safety equipment. Information is provided during the first class.

If you are a high school graduate or HSE (High School Equivalency) completer and plan to go to college, this course will help you prepare for placement tests in math and English. If you have already taken the placement tests and placed in one or more developmental courses, this class is for you.
