Mitchell community college partners with Piedmont HealthCare – Mitchell Community College and Piedmont HealthCare have announced a new partnership through the College’s Apprenticeship Iredell program. 

Apprenticeship Iredell, established in fall 2020, is a work-based learning opportunity with the goal of developing highly skilled workers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) related fields. The program provides an opportunity for Mitchell students to be hired by an industry partner to acquire on-the-job training while simultaneously receiving classroom instruction from the College. 

 Jeff Smith, CEO, and Jeff Taylor, Director of Operations and Human Resources, were present to represent Piedmont HealthCare, one of the largest physician-owned multi-specialty groups in North Carolina and the Southeast. “Piedmont HealthCare is excited to provide the first healthcare apprenticeship program in our area. Our partnership with Mitchell Community College and Iredell Statesville Schools provides students with the opportunity for free tuition, real-world job experience, and a successful career in healthcare,” said Taylor. Apprenticeship Iredell now full sponsor status – Mitchell Community College’s Apprenticeship Iredell program recently received full apprenticeship sponsor status by North Carolina Community College System’s ApprenticeshipNC. This status means Mitchell is an integral facilitator with apprenticeship programs, allowing employers to participate in apprenticeship programs at no cost and with a more streamlined process.

“The college recognizes the critical urgency employers have for recruiting and retaining highly skilled workers,” said Amanda Rhea, Mitchell’s Director of Educational Partnerships. “Apprenticeship Iredell aligns on-the-job training with instruction at Mitchell to rapidly meet the evolving needs of industries in the county.” READ MORE

 

 

I-SS working to grow student internship, pre-apprenticsehip programs – Iredell-Statesville Schools is growing its Career & Technical Education internships and pre-apprenticeship program.

Joanie Winterkamp, the district’s work-based learning coordinator, hopes to get more students excited and signed up to participate in work-based learning experiences where a student participates in the daily operations of a worksite under the direct supervision of a business mentor.

“It provides a realistic environment within which a student intern learns about a particular industry or occupation and applies knowledge and skills learned in the classroom,” Winterkamp said. “Ideally, the work experience should contribute to the student’s career pathway helping the student to narrow their career choices.” READ MORE
