Mitchell students win national awards

 

Statesville, NC – Mitchell Community College’s Cosmetic Arts is now a national award winning program. Students and faculty participated in the Association Cosmetology Salon Professionals competition at the Ocean Dunes Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC on Saturday, April 11. The first competition for Mitchell’s Cosmetic Arts program, students participated in three of nine categories and brought home two third place finishes.

 

Mitchell’s Cosmetic Arts curriculum instructs students in the art and science of cosmetic arts. According to Mark Smalley, dean for the program, “The Cosmetology program offers the international Pivot Point Scientific Approach curriculum.” The competition allowed students the unique opportunity to compete as a team against 15 other schools. They were judged on the complete look they created (nails, make-up, costume) with hair being the focus.

 

Students who attended, by home town were (Hiddenite) Vanessa Steelman; (Mooresville) Adria Gaynor; (Statesville) Jorge Avellaneda, Allison Barkley, Jaden Campbell, Jessica Dishman, Ashlyn Murray, Alicia Pio, Jennifer Salonen, Shocobee Turner, Tiante Weaver; (Stony Point) Kolby Usrey; (Taylorsville) Haley Anderson. Instructors who attended were Peggy Haynes, Sally Johnson, Barbara McMillian and Christy Owen.

 

Tiante Weaver with model Alicia Pio placed third in the Braiding & Twist category. Vanessa Steelman with model Ashlyn Murray placed third in the Fantasy Hair category. “We are so proud of our students and how they performed in this national competition!” Smalley adds. “We look forward to more competitions so the students can demonstrate their excellent skill set.”
