Mitchell nursing students receive pins at annual ceremony

Twenty-eight students enrolled in the Mitchell Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program received their pins during a ceremony held May 8. Pam Speight, a 1988 graduate of Mitchell’s nursing program, was the guest speaker. Speight is the Birth Place program nurse and childbirth educator at Iredell Memorial Hospital and is an American Heart Association BLS instructor. She told the students, “You will make a difference to everyone you come across.”

Seven students were recognized for excellence during the ceremony. Emily Johnson received the Academic Achievement award for maintaining the highest grade point average during her enrollment in the nursing program. Shannon Waggoner received the Leadership award for setting an example and for motivating others. Vicki Harrington received the Outstanding Clinician award for excellence in all clinical settings. Fiona Raffan received the Best All-Around award her overall performance in academics, communication, critical thinking, clinical performance, collaboration, attitude, professional behavior and has leadership potential. Jennifer Jennings received the Professionalism award for maintaining mature, professional composure under all circumstances. Louisa Little received the Humanitarianism award for her compassion towards clients, staff, and peers. Tina Caviness received the Tenacity award for overcoming obstacles to achieve her educational goals.

The Beth Mains Scholarship award was presented to Dawn Moore.

Freshman honor marshals, who were selected based on their academic standing, were Crystal Beam, Greta Harmon, Terry Jarrell and Christine McGuire.
