Mitchell students nominated for honor

Mitchell students Rachel Vance (Mocksville) and Brandi Swisher (Mocksville) have been selected as the nominees for the All-USA Community College Academic Team from Mitchell Community College. The All-USA Community College Academic Team recognizes high achieving two-year college students who demonstrate academic excellence along with leadership and service. Twenty national team members are selected annually in March with each receiving a $5,000 scholarship. Both Mitchell students’ scholarship applications will be placed in the national pool for this coveted honor.

Rachel Vance, Associate in Arts and Criminal Justice double major, plans to attend Western Carolina University after graduating from Mitchell. She aims to pursue a criminal psychology major with plans to continue on for a doctorate degree and to work for the FBI. Vance says the small school environment of Mitchell was impactful on her experience. “People care about you as a person,” she noted. “You’re not just another face in the crowd.”

Brandi Swisher, Associate in Arts major, also intends to attend Western Carolina University after graduating Mitchell in May 2018. There she plans to earn a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in art education with the long-term goal of teaching art at the high school or community college level. Like Vance, Swisher expressed how meaningful the close-knit environment at Mitchell with a low student to faculty ratio was to her.
