Stories of Excellence – Alena Yang
Alena Yang has growing plans for her future, figuratively and literally. One of Mitchell’s first Agribusiness graduates, Alena started taking finance classes at Mitchell in 2013. When the Agribusiness program started in fall 2014, she shifted her program of study because of an interest that was sparked in high school.
Now as graduation draws near, Alena reflects that her journey at Mitchell has been nothing short of amazing. One of Alena’s favorite things about Mitchell is the connections she has made during her studies. Meeting a lot of different people from diverse backgrounds, she enjoyed finding similarities and building friendships. Alena recognizes how important this network will be for her future.
The support Alena received at Mitchell has made a huge impact on her journey. “The faculty and staff are great,” she said, “Everyone is welcome and everyone is welcoming. And I love that–the understanding of ‘hey, we’re here to help you and help you to excel’.” She would recommend Mitchell to anyone, particularly high school students thinking about future college plans. In Mitchell’s supportive environment, “you really understand college responsibilities—it’s definitely different than high school!”
This fall, Alena will begin the bachelor’s in agribusiness management program at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro. She plans to continue on for a master’s degree at North Carolina State University or another UNC system school. While she hopes to gain experience working with Syngenta or another large agricultural company, her ultimate goal is to own her own nursery and be her own boss. She knows she is prepared for this future because of her time at Mitchell.
