Stories of Excellence–Crystal Locklear

Crystal Locklear believes in life-long learning and the value of education. Whether pursing a higher degree, building skills for the workforce, or learning for personal interest, excellence is continuing to learn and following your dreams.

Locklear came to Mitchell as a traditional student in 1999 after her high school graduation. However, personal and professional obligations soon took priority over her educational goals. “I simply did not know what I wanted to do,” she said. In 2010, she tried again, returning to Mitchell because of the college’s location and value. Following her interest in human resources, she began coursework in Mitchell’s A.A.S. Business Administration–Human Resources Management track. Instructor Keith Miller was extremely helpful in helping her re-start her higher education journey. “He is full of information to help any student succeed regardless of what career they choose.” Too soon, though, life again took precedence over Locklear’s studies. The value of education did not fade in Locklear’s mind though. In 2012, she returned to her studies at Mitchell, more focused than ever. “I was determined nothing was going to get in my way this time and nothing did.” Even when an unexpected surgery threatened to delay her studies, Locklear doubled-down and finished her final courses.

In 2013, Locklear completed her degree. “The day I graduated, I did not just receive my degree. I received a pride in myself for finishing, the knowledge that anything worth having is hard work and worth going after, and the belief that I could do anything I put my mind to.”

Her time at Mitchell not only taught her the skills needed for a career in human resources, it also made her a better person. Each day at Mitchell she found someone or something to inspire her to keep pursing her goal no matter the odds. The smiling faces of the faculty who shared their knowledge, the friendships and connections that were made in and out of the classroom and the activities on campus which bring students together were what made a difference for Locklear.  “Every single day is a learning opportunity,” she said, “not just in schooling, but in how to be a better person, how to help others, how to succeed, and how to motivate someone else to succeed.”

Locklear is currently pursuing her Bachelor’s degree in psychology with plans to continue on for a Master’s in counseling. “If you take nothing else away from my story,” she urged, “take away that it is never too late to educate yourself or go after your dreams.” Start your educational journey at Mitchell!
