Stories of Excellence

Myrtle Westmoreland

Learning never stops at Mitchell Community College. At 95 years old, Myrtle Westmoreland is furthering her education with How to Use a Computer for Seniors, a Mitchell Continuing Education course. “I’ve had a computer for two years and I haven’t learned to use it,” Westmoreland stated, “I decided to get with it.”

Discovering more about computers will allow Westmoreland to better communicate with children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mitchell’s short-term class designed specifically for seniors covers a variety of topics including the basics of using a computer, internet and email skills and beginning social media use. Westmoreland noted that the class instructors were very helpful and patient. “It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks,” she said. Even though she earned her college degree many years ago, Westmoreland knows it is important to continue learning and highly recommends Mitchell. She advised others to “Start early—don’t wait!” Westmoreland is proof that no one is too old to learn something new.
